Amyloidosis is a chronic metabolic diseased caused by amyloid (starch-like) proteins building up in tissues and organs. These proteins has chemical properties similar to starch, however, they are actually proteins, not starch. Symptoms depend on the organs involved and the degree of damage. Frequently affected organs include kidney, heart, liver, stomach, intestine, tongue, spleen, nervous system and skin. Affected organs have enlargement and dysfunction. The source of these amyloid (starch-like) proteins is unknown. In addition to treating the secondary diseases caused by amyloidosis, there is no treatment for amyloidosis itself yet.
