Anemia

The main function of red blood cells is to carry oxygen. Anemia can be a decrease in the total amount of red blood cells in the blood, a decrease of hemoglobin, or a lowered ability of the blood to carry oxygen. Symptoms of anemia include fatigue, weakness and sometimes poor concentration. Causes of anemia include impaired production of red blood cells, increased destruction of red blood cells, blood loss, fluid overload, and intestinal inflammation such as H. pylori infection, celiac disease and inflammatory bowel diseases. Anemia is typically diagnosed on a complete blood count. Treatment include oral iron, injectable iron, blood transfusion (for very severe cases), Erythropoiesis-stimulating agent and Hyperbaric oxygen.
