Autonomic neuropathy

Autonomic neuropathy is damage of nerves controlling many basic automatic activities. It can be caused by many different diseases. Diabetes is the most common cause. The function of the autonomic nervous system is to control heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, bladder function, bowel function, sweating and breathing. These important functions are automatic and do not need your consciousness. Autonomic neuropathy can affect one or more these automatic functions. In many cases, there is no specific treatment. In some cases, such as diabetes, the best way is to control diabetes in order to prevent disease progress. In more serious cases, drugs can be used to maintain blood pressure and prevent fainting.
