Black, hairy tongue

Black hairy tongue is a condition that "hair" grows in the middle or on the rear of the tongue. The "hair" can be yellow or white, but most commonly, it is black. The "hair" is actually fungus growing on the tongue. It is often seen in the elderly, especially the frail people. Usually it causes no other symptoms. Sometimes if the "hair" is too long, it can stimulate the palate and cause nausea. Black hairy tongue looks worrisome, but it will not cause any health problems.
