Brain AVM (arteriovenous malformation)

Brain arteriovenous malformation is caused by abnormal cerebrovascular development during embryonic development. It is a congenital disease. Patients can have repeated intracranial hemorrhage, partial or generalized convulsive seizure, transient ischemic attack and progressive neurological dysfunction. Surgery is the main treatment method. But the following patients should not undertake surgery: the lesion is too large (involving more than two lobes of the brain); lesion is located deep in the brain or important functional areas; patients have serious neurological symptoms; patients complicated by systemic severe disease. Non surgery treatment should be done for patients who have no bleeding or are inappropriate to receive surgery. Treatment aims at preventing or stopping bleeding, controlling seizures and relieving existing neurological symptoms.
