Bullous pemphigoid

Bullous pemphigoid is a bullous skin disease. It mainly affects the elderly. The blisters are round or oval, with diameter at around 1 cm. The diameter can go up to several centimeters. Blister content is clear. Occasionally the content is bloody. If there is secondary infection, then the content is purulent. If the blisters rupture, the skin surface has erosion covered by scab. They are easy to heal. Lesions often occur on the trunk or the flexor side of the limbs. About half of patients have oral mucosal damage, specifically, blisters or erosion on palate or buccal mucosa. The blisters are itching. It does not affect the general health in the early stage. Bullous pemphigoid is a chronic disease and is rarely fatal. The prognosis is good. Glucocorticoids are the preferred medication and prednisone is often used.
