Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel of your wrist. Early symptoms are pain and numbness in the thumb, index finger, middle finger and half the ring finger. Later it may cause thumb muscle atrophy. Treatment: avoid over-using and fatigue of the palm and wrist; use hand support to keep the wrist in the center position; steroid injection in the carpal tunnel. Severe cases need surgery. Surgery includes transverse carpal ligament section, exploration and carpal tunnel nerve release.
