Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a group of deteriorating chronic airway diseases, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It is characterized by respiratory obstruction. It is a very common disease. More than 90% cases can be attributed to smoking. For non-smokers, causes may include air pollution and genetics. Medical treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is not satisfactory. Smokers should quit smoking and watch out for the early symptoms of COPD so that they can get early treatment. Medication cannot change the final result of the disease, but it can improve symptoms.
