Cleft lip and cleft palate

Cleft lip and cleft palate are splits in the upper lip, palate or both. These are the most common birth defects. Cleft lip and cleft palate can be corrected by surgeries. A series of surgeries are required. The cleft lip is repaired by 12 months of age, then cleft palate is repaired by age of 18 months. There may be follow-up surgeries between age 2 and late teen ages.
