Cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV). If you have cold sores, small blisters appear on the lips and around the mouth. It is mainly transmitted through direct contact. It can also be transmitted by tableware contaminated by saliva. The small blisters sometimes are itching and painful. There is mild inflammatory reaction around the blisters. A few days later, blisters rupture and scabs form. For most patients cold sores do not need treatment. They will heal by themselves within two weeks. You can use cold drink or ice to apply on the cold sore to reduce the discomfort. If you have cold sores repeatedly or they are very painful, antiviral ointment containing acyclovir can be applied on the affected location. They are most effective when used before blisters occur.
