Collapsed lung (pneumothorax)

Pneumothorax refers to the air enters the gap between the lung and the chest wall. The pleural cavity pressure increases, or even turns from negative pressure to positive pressure. It compresses the lung and hampers the blood flow into the heart, resulting in various degrees of heart and lung dysfunction. If only a small amount of air enters the pleural cavity without complication, usually it can heal itself. When there is a large amount of air, a drainage pipe or drainage needle will be inserted between the ribs to slowly discharge the air.
