Cyclospora infection is an emerging parasitic protozoosis suffered by both humans and animals. It mainly causes gastroenteritis and chronic diarrhea. The main symptom of human cyclospora infection is watery diarrhea. For patients with normal immune function, the diarrhea is self-limiting. Patients generally recover in a few days or weeks. For immune-compromised patients, especially AIDS patients, the diarrhea may last for several months or years. Persistent diarrhea leads to dehydration, malnutrition, and even death. Antibiotics are used to treat cyclospora infection.
