Diphtheria is an acute respiratory contagious disease caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Diphtheria is spread through contact with patients or carriers. You may also catch diphtheria if contact objects contaminated with patients secretion, but the chances are low. Patients are primarily children. Symptoms include fever, sore throat, light gray pieces of film in the throat and breathing difficulties .Severe cases may have respiratory obstruction, heart failure, nerve damage, or even death. Incidence of diphtheria is now rare because of wide vaccination.
