Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic digestive disease that occurs when stomach acid and bile reflux into the esophagus (reflux). Typical symptoms are heartburn, acid reflux and nausea. The majority of patients with GERD can be treated after acid suppression and anti-reflux therapy. A small proportion of patients require surgery.
