Gastrointestinal anthrax is anthrax mainly affect the gastrointestinal tract. When a person eats raw or undercooked meat from an animal infected with anthrax, they can develop gastrointestinal anthrax. Once ingested, anthrax spores can affect throat, esophagus, stomach, intestines. Infection usually develops from 1 to 7 days after exposure. Symptoms include swelling of neck or neck lymph nodes,sore throat, bloody vomiting, bloody diarrhea, stomach pain and swelling of abdomen. Gastrointestinal anthrax has a high mortality rate. Gastrointestinal anthrax is rarely reported in the USA.
