Geographic tongue

Geographic tongue is also known as map tongue. Symptoms include atrophy of filiform papillae, which leave a smooth round or oval red stripping area that looks like a map. Map tongue damage occurrs on the surface of the tongue. When it heals at one area, it often migrates to other parts of the tongue. It is more common in children and adolescents. It may look scaring, but it does not cause any health problems and it is not associated with infection or cancer.
