Goiter

Goiter is characterized by the enlargement of thyroid gland in front of neck. It is more common in women and it is an epedemic in some areas. Early symptoms include fever, sweating, heart palpitations, increased appetite and feeling of hunger. Goiter is usually painless, but can cause coughing, swallowing and breathing difficulties. The most common cause of goiter worldwide is a lack of iodine in diet. Iodized salt should be supplied in areas with high goiter incidence. Treatment depends on the size of the goiter and the root causes of disease.
