Growth plate fractures

Growth plates are located at the end of child's bones. They are the softest and weakest section of the skeleton. A slight injury that can only cause joint sprain in adults, may result in growth plate fractures in a child. A fractured growth plate often needs immediate treatment. Otherwise, bone growth may be affected. Most growth plate fractures occur infingers, forearm and lower leg. Signs and symptoms of a growth plate fracture may include bone pain, warmth and swelling at the end of bone or near a joint. The least severe fractures usually requires only a cast or splint. More severe fractures needs surgery.
