Hiatal hernia

Hiatal hernia is a condition that the stomach enters into the thoracic cavity through the diaphragmatic hiatus. Hiatal hernia without symptom or only with mild symptoms usually does not need treatment. For most patients conservative treatment is enough. When medical treatment fails, surgery can be considered. The main purpose of surgical treatment is to repair the enlarged esophageal hiatus.
