Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) is a condition that the thyroid gland produces too much thyroxine hormone. The excessive thyroxine can accelerate your body's metabolism significantly, causing symptoms including sudden weight loss, a rapid or irregular heartbeat, sweating, nervousness or irritability. Treatment includes sradiotive iodine (to shrink thyroid gland), anti-thyroid drugs such as propylthiouracil and methimazole (Tapazole), beta blockers, or surgical removal of most of the thyroid gland. Major risk of the surgery is damaging vocal cords or parathyroid glands.
