Infant botulism

Infants may develop botulism. When Clostridium botulinum spores go into infant's intestines, the bacteria can grow and produce dangerous botulinum toxin. The Clostridium botulinum spores may come from three sources, contaminated soil or dust (such as construction and farmland where soil is disturbed), honey, and home-canning food. Symptoms of infant botulism include constipation, floppy movements, weakness and difficulty sucking or feeding. Infant botulism is a medical emergency. It can be treated with botulism immune globulin.
