Inhalation (pulmonary) anthrax

Inhalation (pulmonary) anthrax is the most deadly form of anthrax. When anthrax spores are inhaled into the lungs, they travel to alveolar spaces. They are transported through the lymph node system to mediastinal lymph nodes, where they multiple and produce anthrax toxin. Ultimately the toxins cause severe breathing problems and shock. Early inhalation anthrax can be treated by antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin (Cipro) or doxycycline (Monodox, Vibramycin etc.). Advanced anthrax may not respond to antibiotics since there are too much toxin in the body.
