Priapism is a prolonged erection of the penis. Ischemic priapism is the most common type of priapism. In ischemic priapism, blood cannot flow away from penis, resulting in unwanted penile erection. Sign and symptoms of ischemic priapism included penile erection lasting for more than 4 hours, or penile erection is unrelated to sexual stimulation or interest, and progressive penis pain. Treatment include draining excessive blood using small needle and syringe and flushing with saline solution, sympathomimetic medication such as phenylephrine, and surgery to reroute blood vessels so that blood can flow through the penis normally.
