Lichen planus is a inflammatory condition that often affect skin. It can also affect mucous membrane, hair or nails. Lichen planus on the skin appears purplish flat bumps. It is often itchy. The bumps develop over several weeks. Lichen planus can also affect the membrane of the mouth and vagina resulting in lacy white patches and itching or painful sores. Treatment include Corticosteroids cream or ointment, immuno-suppressants such as tacrolimus (Protopic) and pimecrolimus (Elidel), antihistamines (to relieve itchiing and pain), light therapy or retinoid. Retinoid should be used with caution since it can cause birth defects.
