Limited scleroderma (CREST syndrome) is a subtype of scleroderma. scleroderma means "hardened skin". Limited scleroderma patients have tight hardened skin, typically on fingers, toes, and sometimes on the face and neck. The skin can be so tight that you may have difficulty bend your fingers or open your mouth. You fingers may turn very cold and pale when exposed to cold or emotional stress (Raynaud's phenomena). Patients may also have hardened bumps (calcium deposits) under skin on elbow, knees or fingers. If the esophagus is affected, you may have swallowing difficulties. There is no cure for limited scleroderma, but treatments are available to relieve symptoms.
