Mastitis is an acute purulent infection of breast. It often affects lactating women, especially first-time mothers. Initially patients have breast swelling, pain, lump and tenderness. There are also redness and warmth on affected breast skin. If pus cannot be expelled, symptoms will worsen, causing breast carbuncle. Severe cases may develop sepsis. Treatment: the first choice antibiotics is penicillin. The amount depends on symptoms. After abscess forms, it should be cut open to drain pus.
