Meningitis is usually caused by viruses, bacteria or other microbial infections. Occasionally it is caused by certain drugs. The most common symptoms include headache, neck stiffness, fever, vomiting, confusion, disturbance of consciousness and low tolerance towards light or sound. Since the infection location is very close to brain and spinal cord, meningitis may be fatal. Meningitis is usually treated as a medical emergency. If not treated timely, patients may die within a few hours or it causes permanent brain damage.
