Mitral regurgitation acute

Mitral valve is composed of valve leaflets, annulus, chordae and papillary muscle. Any structural abnormality or dysfunction can result in mitral regurgitation. Mild mitral regurgitation patients have no symptoms or only mild discomfort. Critically ill patients may have liver blood congestion, liver enlargement, liver tenderness, ankle edema, pleural effusion, or ascites. Acute patients may develop acute left ventricular failure or pulmonary edema. Treatment depends on patient's condition. Severe mitral regurgitation patients should have valve replacement or valvuloplasty.
