Mitral stenosis (narrowness) is often a complication of rheumatic heart disease. A small number of cases can be the result of congenital stenosis or mitral annulus or sub-annulus calcification. It is common in adults. The disease affects more women than men. Based on the degree of stenosis, patients have following symptoms: difficulty breathing, coughing up blood, cough, fatigue, palpitations, chest pain, dizziness etc. If not treated, it may lead to serious heart complications. Mitral stenosis can be treated by surgery.
