Multiple system atrophy (MSA)

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a rare nervous system disease. People at 50 to 60 years are more affected. Onset is hidden and it progresses gradually. The first symptoms are autonomic nervous dysfunction, Parkinson's syndrome and cerebellar ataxia. A small number of patients begin with muscle atrophy. Despite the starting symptoms, two or more types of nervous system symptoms will appear as the disease progresses. There is no specific treatment. Treatment aims at controlling autonomic nervous system disorders and Parkinson's syndrome. Prognosis is poor. The leading cause of death is aspirational pneumonia and sudden death.
