Myelodysplastic syndromes

Myelodysplastic syndrome is a blood-making disorder caused by abnormal hematopoietic stem cell proliferation and differentiation. Symptoms include reduced number of all blood cells in the peripheral blood, bone marrow cells over-growth, and abnormal mature and immature cells. 30% to 60% patients can develop into leukemia. Treatment usually focuses on reducing or preventing complications. In some cases, bone marrow transplant can help to extend life.
