Osteomyelitis is inflammation of bones. It often involves long bones (such as long bones in arms and legs), vertebrae and pelvis. Patients have localized bone pain, along with fever and discomfort. The infection causing osteomyelitis can often be cured, but it may recur. Chronic osteomyelitis can be treated by surgery and antibiotics. Children with acute osteomyelitis and patients of vertebral osteomyelitis usually do not require surgery.
