Pericardial effusion is accumulation of excess fluid around heart. For most patients, there is no symptom because the amount of liquid is small. If there is a large amount of liquid, patients may have shortness of breath and chest pain. If pericardial effusion persists for several months or longer, it is called chronic pericardial effusion. They become a big burden for your heart. If left untreated, it can cause heart failure or death.
