Pericarditis

The two layers of thin film surrounding heart are called pericardium. Pericarditis is inflammation of pericardium. The main symptom of pericarditis is chest pain. Other symptoms are also possible. Chest pain is caused by inflamed pericardium rubbing against each other. Mild pericarditis often resolves itself. More severe cases need drug therapy, Aspirin and other NSAIDs are very effective in treating pain associated with pericarditis. Occasionally surgery is required.
