Peritonitis

Peritonitis is inflammation of peritoneum. Peritoneum is a thin membrane covering abdominal cavity and abdomen organs such as liver and intestine. Peritonitis can be caused by bacterial infection, chemical irritation or damage due to another serious illness. Early symptoms are cause by peritoneal irritation, including abdominal pain, tenderness, muscle tension and rebound tenderness. Late symptoms are due to systematic infections and toxin absorption. Treatment typically includes antibiotic therapy and surgery in certain cases. If left untreated, it can lead to life-threatening infections.
