Polycystic kidney disease

Polycystic kidney disease is a common hereditary kidney disease. Cysts of multiple sizes appear in both kidneys. The cysts will eventually destroy the structure and function of kidneys, leading to kidney failure. The main symptoms are bilateral renal enlargement, kidney pain, blood in urine, and high blood pressure. Other organs such as liver can also be affected. Lifestyle changes and medication may help preventing the occurrence of kidney complications. Polycystic kidney disease is not curable yet. Treatment aims at controlling symptoms such as high blood pressure, bladder or kidney infection, hematuria, or renal failure.
