Polyhydramnios is a condition that there is too much amniotic fluid. Amniotic fluid is the fluid surrounding a fetus. It protects the fetus. Amniotic fluid volume increases with pregnancy. Normal amount of amniotic fluid is about 800-1200ml at full-term pregnancy. If the volume of amniotic fluid exceeds 2000ml at any time of pregnancy, it is called polyhydramnios. Polyhydramnios can cause abnormal fetal position, premature delivery and postpartum hemorrhage. Mild polyhydramnios may reslove on its own. Severe polyhydramnios may require treatment, such as draining the excessive amniotic fluid.
