Pseudomembranous colitis

Pseudomembranous colitis is usually caused by infection of Clostridium difficile bacteria. The inflammatory response is almost always accompanied by excessive growth of bacteria. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, decreased blood pressure and mental confusion. Severe cases can result in toxic mega-colon or even death. Antibiotics that effectively control Clostridium difficile can be used. Vancomycin and metronidazole are the most effective ones. Treatment is successful in most cases.
