Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)

Respiratory syncytial virus is lungs and respiratory tract infections caused by virus. It is often seen in newborns and infants less than 6 months old. Initial symptoms include cough, runny nose, fever and wheezing. These symptoms are very common and can easily be misdiagnosed as influenza. Some children can develop very serious chest infection, resulting in pneumonia or bronchitis. Respiratory syncytial virus can be spread through contact. Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms. No drug is very effective. Antibiotics have no effect on virus. Children with severe symptoms can use monoclonal antibodies.
