Reye's syndrome is characterized by brain edema and liver dysfunction. It most often affects infants and children aged 6 months to 4 years. But people of other age groups can also be affected. The onset is rapid. There are usually upper respiratory tract and gastrointestinal virus infection symptoms before the onset. Brain damage is the most prominent feature of the disease. Studies have shown that aspirin or aspirin-containing drugs is associated with this disease. Children and teenagers recovering from chickenpox or flu-like symptoms should never take aspirin.
