Rickets is a softening and weakening of bones of children, due to insufficient intake of vitamin D for a long time. There are deformation and swelling of hand and foot joints. Legs may be O-shaped. Breast bone protrudes outside. Patient may also have hunch back in spine and pelvis deformation. Slight skeletal deformity can recover in several years. Severe deformity needs surgery. Rickets can be prevented by eating foods containing vitamin D or taking vitamin D supplements. Doing outdoor activities for 30 minutes a day and receiving sunlight will allow the body to produce vitamin D needed by the body.
