Sciatica

The sciatic nerve is the main nerve dominating legs. Sciatica refers to pain of the sciatic nerve or its branches. Some sciatica is caused by protruding lumber bones pressing the sciatic nerve. Since herniated disc usually affect nerves on one side, pain is only one-sided. The degree of pain depends on the cause and acuteness. If pain comes in repeated episodes, the affected leg may have muscle atrophy, or it may cause limping walk. Mild cases can be treated with anti-inflammatory analgesics. Severe patients need complete bed rest for two weeks. Treatment focuses on controlling the underlying diseases.
