Self injury or cutting

Self-injury refers to behavior of hurting oneself without intention to die. It is an unhealthy way to cope with pain, intense anger, stress or frustration. The methods include using knife, scissors or other instruments to cut skin, eating foreign body, and medication overdosing. Young adults, especially young women are more likely to self-injure. Self-injury is often the result of many social and inter-personal factors. Depression, borderline personality disorder and other mental illness patients may also self-injure. Most of these patients have a poor prognosis. Some people do it so often that it becomes habitual: they want to injure themselves once they are frustrated.
