Shigella infection is an intestinal infectious disease prevalent in the 2-4 years old children. It can only be caused by ingestion of food or drink containing Shigella bacteria. Only a small amount of bacteria (10-100) can cause infection. The main symptom is diarrhea. Patient's stool is very loose and may contain blood, mucus or pus. It can be treated by antibiotics. Washing hands can prevent the spread of Shigella disease. Anti-diarrheal drugs may make the condition worse so they should be avoided.
