Sickle cell anemia

Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disease. Symptoms and signs appear six months after birth. Symptoms include lack of energy, shortness of breath, jaundice, and severe pain in bone, chest or abdomen. When the condition suddenly worsens, which is called sickle cell crisis, the symptoms can be very severe and patient may even die. With good medical care, most children can grow up. Bone marrow transplant can be used for severe cases.
