Skin lichen planus

Skin lichen planus are purplish, often itchy, flat-topped bumps on the skin. The development may take several weeks. It can be very itching. There may be blisters on the bumps. When the blisters break, they form scabs or crusts. Treatment include prescription corticosteroid cream or ointment. Oral corticosteroid is needed for severe patients. Drugs such as tacrolimus (Protopic) and pimecrolimus (Elidel) can suppress the immune system and manage lichen planus. Antihistamines can be used to relieve itching and pain. Light therapy may also be helpful. Severe cases may need retinoids.
