Sprains

Sprains refers to stretching or tearing of ligaments in your joints. The most common type of sprains are ankle sprains. Symptoms include pain, swelling or bruising of the affected joint. Mild sprains can be treated using over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) or acetaminophen (Tylenol, others). You may also need to apply ice pack to reduce swelling. Severe cases need to immobilize the area with a brace or splint. If there is ligament tearing or muscle rupture, surgery may be needed.
