Sudden (acute) pulmonary edema

Sudden (acute) pulmonary edema refers excess fluid building up in the lungs during a short period of time. It is a medical emergency. Symptoms include extreme shortness of breath, wheezing, anxiety, a cough producing pink frothy sputum, and heart palpitation. The first step of treatment is giving oxgen through a face mask or nasal cannula. Medications include nitroglycerin, diuretics such as furosemide (Lasix), and nifedipine (Procardia), morphine, nitroprusside (Nitropress) and blood pressure drugs.
