Sycosis barbae or sycosis vulgaris is a chronic infection of the chin or bearded region. It is caused by a deep infection of hair follicles, often by Staphylococcus or Propionibacterium bacteria. Red papules and pustules may form around coarse hair in the beard or the back of the neck. The skin lesion may be itchy or painful.
