Thrombocythemia is a disease caused by increased platelet production which results in abnormal blood clotting. Symptoms include hand and foot tingling and other abnormal sensations, fingertips coldness, headache, weakness and dizziness. Bleeding symptoms are often very mild, which include nose bleeding, easy bruising, gum bleeding or gastrointestinal bleeding. You may have enlarged liver or spleen. Treatment of essential thrombocythemia often uses drugs to reduce platelet production. If the medication is not sufficient to reduce platelet production, platelet removal treatment should be given. Platelet removal is to take out blood, remove platelet, and transfuse the rest blood back to the body. This treatment is often combined with medication. Treatment of secondary thrombocytosis should focus on the primary disease.
